1st FIMA International Pre-Conference for Medical Students

in conjunction with

29th FIMA Council Meeting

5th FIMA International Scientific Conference

& 14th IMAM Annual Scientific Meeting

1.0 INTRODUCTION The Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia – Student Chapter (IMAM-SC), in collaboration with the Federation of Islamic Medical Association (FIMA) will be organizing the 1st FIMA International Pre-Conference for Medical Students this year (2012), which will be held in conjunction with the 29th FIMA Annual Scientific Meeting.   The theme chosen for this first ever students’ congress in the history of FIMA is “Nurturing Holistic Medical Graduates”. 2.0 RATIONALE Holistic in the field of medicine is defined as treatment of the whole person, taking into account biological, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of a patient. In order to provide holistic treatment, the healthcare provider himself should be trained to be a holistic person. The medical graduates are expected to be all-rounder and well versed with medical knowledge and able to interact holistically with the individual patient or community as a whole. Thus, they should be exposed to a unique system of education and experience during their undergraduate training. They are expected to comprehend the bio-psycho-social issues of a patient, as well as religious, political, social and economic aspect of the community they are to serve in future. It is hoped that the planned pre-conference meeting will be a platform for the medical students to share their learning experiences with each other, which would contribute to producing holistic medical graduates. The sub-theme of discussion may range from medical curriculum, extra-curriculum activities, scientific and research presentation. 3.0 OBJECTIVES The objectives of this pre-conference meeting are:
  1. To outline the importance of holistic medical graduates
  2. To provide a platform for students to share their experiences towards a holistic healthcare approach

Welcome to 5th FIMA Conference 2012

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Merciful

Peace and Blessing Be Upon all. May this message find all in the best state of health physically and spiritually.

I take this opportunity to invite all to Kuala Lumpur between the 13th to 15th September 2012. The Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia (IMAM) is grateful to Almighty Allah for giving us the opportunity to host the 5th  Federation of    Islamic Medical Associations ( FIMA ) Conference in conjunction with the 14th  IMAM Annual Scientific Meeting . This three days conference will be preceded by the 29th Council meeting of FIMA Executive Committee.

Currently the Muslim world makes up close to a fifth of the world population with Islam being the second largest religion.  The Muslim population globally is expected to double in the next 20 years according to a study done in early 2011. The increase in population brings with it socioeconomic challenges including health. Unfortunately, the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) Ten year  Action Plan document of  2005 does not tackle health related issues specifically  .  At the same time the United Nation  Millennium Development Goals of 2000 has targeted basic minimal achievements for member countries to achieve by 2015, many impinging on health issues .  For this reason, this years ‘ Conference has chosen the theme : “Health and the Muslim World ; Meeting the Millennium Development Goals “ . Delegates will be able to hear first hand from scholars, practitioners, scientists and policy makers from the Muslim world deliberate on health issues which has been identified by the Millennium Development Goals. Researchers will also be able to present their findings as they actively try to contribute to tackle health related challenges facing the Muslim Ummah.

May Allah Bless all our efforts in making this Conference successful and by so doing contributing to the progress of the Muslim Ummah.

See you all in Kuala Lumpur!
